The Science:
Sound waves vary in length depending on their frequency. The frequency of a sound wave determines how many cycles (vibrations) occur in a second, and the length of the sound wave is the physical distance over which one cycle occurs. This distance is called the wavelength.

Higher frequency sounds have shorter wavelengths
These include the high-end of vocals, hi-hats, and many instruments. The sound waves for these high frequencies are closer together, just a few inches or less. Even these small waves can go right through thin foam acoustic panels and bounce off of the wall behind.

Lower frequency sounds have longer wavelengths
These are sounds with low-pitched tones, like the low end of vocals, kicks and 808s. These waves are spaced further apart and are unaffected by thinner acoustic panels. My thicker sound panels are made to do what thin ones cannot and absorb these waves!

Thicker acoustic panels absorb more sound than thinner ones
They have a greater depth to trap and dissipate sound waves. As sound waves enter the material, the increased thickness allows them to travel further into the panel before being reflected or refracted, giving the panel more time and surface area to convert sound energy into heat. This enhanced ability to absorb sound is particularly effective at lower frequencies, which require more material to be absorbed than higher frequencies.
